Temple of Silence
The Temple of Silence can be accessed from deep within the Forest wing of the Conservatory. It is comprised of overgrown stone ruins, moss-covered sculptures, reflection pools, dark caves, and worn-down wooden structures. There are many openings to the temple — stone doors, fern canyons, mossy tunnels, wooden gates, underwater caves, and more are always being discovered. Scenes in this temple should appear rustic and weathered, plants should spread freely and not be overly maintained, materials and objects here should feel naturally crafted or assembled.
Warm, dark, wooden walls zig-zag high up into the ceiling, inlaid with brass and geometric designs. Plants stretch through the cracks in the architecture, dappled in the faintest hints of light that creep through the roof. Low light and foliage shroud the walls. True to its name, it is quiet here. If you listen closely, perhaps you can hear the aura of low, muffled, droning brass that slithers through the temple. The atrium is comfortably dark and gentle, much like the aura of an old library. Pools of water sit nestled in the comforting embrace of plants. Perhaps streams or waterfalls connect them, but the movement of water yields little to no sound. |
Your path winds throughout the Temple of Silence. You may enter these rooms and complete the prompts in any order you wish.
As you locate the archway into the inner reaches of the Temple, something catches your eye at the corner of your vision, just beyond its reach. A flicker, a movement, a rippling pattern of light and shadow. Something—someone? Passing through the archway causes it to seal up behind you, vines and moss weaving together in an unbreakable quilted tangle.
A long hallway stretches in front of you. More moss and ferns have overtaken this shadowy pass. Thin beams of golden light stream in from impossible places, illuminating the overgrown path ahead in spotty patches. The soft ground absorbs your footsteps.
It is so quiet here that you almost don’t notice the twin channels of water flanking your path, unobstructed by even the heavy undergrowth peeking through the floors and walls. They are thin, small, shallow conduits, travelling in brassy, geometric channels embedded into the floor. They run parallel to your path, stretching on deeper into the Temple.
Another flicker of movement draws your attention away from the ground. Your spirit flutters as you discover its source—along the walls dances a projected figure of an esk. Maybe they appear to be a shadowed silhouette or a hazy memory, or a mangled dream, but something in their gaze is both familiar and yet unfamiliar to you. Light reflecting from the small ducts cast patterned ripples across the scene as it plays out before your unblinking eyes.
An esk, one the color of deep soot with a pale face, bounds across the walls. They’re barren and alone, save from a dim pale dot above their head. You come to the realization they’re fleeing from something. The figure glances back only once, catching your gaze just as their form disappears around a corner.
You press onwards.
