"Deep sadness penetrates my core,
I fear death, and now roam the wilderness—"

— The Epic of Gilgamesh

Origins

How an esk faces their transformation shapes their fate.
Transformation is an intense experience and can cause emotional turmoil or breakthrough. All esk experience their change differently. Some may go through a life review and revisit defining memories, some receive communications from nature, and others may become overwhelmed by fear or resistance. The impact of the change has a lasting effect on the esk's outlook in their new existence and alters their path in the future. This outlook determines their Origin. All esk are marked by their Origin with a vibratory signature that is recognizable to others. Travelers are the esk who have leaned toward acceptance and are marked with a higher, steadier vibration; Trespassers are the esk who have leaned toward resistance and are marked with a lower, pulsing vibration.

Travelers: The Guardians, The Guides, The Kind-hearted.
Esk that find some peace in their Transformation will align as Travelers. These are often the esk that feel moved toward compassion by their life review or by a calling from the environment and many of them go on to act as guardians of the lands they now inhabit. Many Travelers are caring and helpful toward anyone who goes missing in their territories, they often believe that transformations are an act of compassion that spares the recipient from death and suffering or gives them a second chance to right their wrongs. Many Travelers see transformation as a privilege and gift to be shared with others.

The archetypes of healers and guides do not apply to all Travelers and can change over time. Some Travelers are unfriendly — even if they have accepted their own fate they may not extend this perspective to others. Travelers may have found peace in their personal journey but they can have all kinds of personalities and intentions; all esk are individuals.

Trespassers: The Tormentors, The Grief-stricken, The Rogues
Esk that are deeply troubled by their transformation and refuse their fate will align as Trespassers. These esk may be haunted by events in their past life or feel unable to let go of the trauma of becoming lost. Some develop resentment for the esk that transformed them or for the environment they are now linked to and may act out maliciously toward its inhabitants or visitors. Trespassers often hold anger or despair in their hearts; some are more cruel to themselves than they are to anyone else, others are so lost in their own emotions that they isolate themselves completely. Trespassers commonly lure the missing away from escape, deceive them or disorient them even further rather than helping them find their way out. Most Trespassers see transformation as a curse and a burden. They change lost souls into esk as a way to feel more in control or pass their pain off to someone else.

The archetypes of tormentors and tricksters do not apply to all Trespassers and can change over time. Some Trespassers still have compassion for others, even if they may lack it for themselves or harbor anger inside. Trespassers can vary greatly in their behavior and personality; each one is unique.

There are more Travelers than Trespassers.
Most esk are willing to embrace their new path and become Travelers, so Trespassers are less common. The type of esk doing the transformation does not determine the type of esk created, but sometimes the esk's visitation can have a profound enough effect on the recipient that it pushes them one way or the other. Some Trespassers knowingly try to influence the recipient in order to sway their alignment.

A second Transformation occurs when an esk changes alignment.
Esk can experience internal change over time that can start to shift their alignment. A Traveler may develop profound resentment for their circumstances or a Trespasser may in time find some inner peace; any deep change to their core personality could start the process of forsaking their Origin. An esk going through a shift in their alignment will feel uncomfortable in their form as their spirit has changed more intensely than their manifestation can keep up with. These esk become lost in their own way — they have lost their known path and known self. When an esk experiences this type of loss they are able to receive a second transformation from another esk which will make their manifestation more compatible with their new sense of self. Sometimes other esk sense their turmoil and offer the transformations to them, but it requires a large amount of energy and not all are up to the task. Sometimes lost esk must journey a long distance to visit powerful, ancient esk who will grant them the transformation.

This second transformation alters their Origin's energy signature, but does not shift it completely. After the second transformation they still hold resonance of their old self and old alignment; they are both old and new, both changed and unchanged, both Traveler and Trespasser. This makes their energy signature have an unusual vibrational quality that is unique from normal esk.

Abnormals: the third Origin.
Any esk that has an unusual energy signature is considered Abnormal. Abnormals are created when esk receive a second transformation or when an unstable transformation takes place. Unstable transformations are those that are given to inanimate objects, organic matter, minerals, fungi, or plants. When esk are re-transformed their energy signature becomes more balanced and whole, but when non-living or non-animal subjects receive Transformations their energy signatures are bizarre or dissonant. These sorts of Abnormals are very strange-looking and unpredictable in their personalities or behaviors. All Abnormals have mutations that distinguish them from normal esk and they have the ability to retain their complete form and abilities in any type of environment. This grants them the ability to do transformations in any location.

Abnormals that are created by changing origins are referred to as Abnormal Travelers or Abnormal Trespassers depending on their new origin. Abnormals that are created from unstable transformations may or may not be Travelers or Trespassers since they may lack the coherence necessary to have a stable energy signature; they are often simply referred to as Abnormals, but some individuals do come to resonate with a secondary origin as they discover their path as an esk — these will become Abnormal Travelers or Abnormal Trespassers.

Any esk that becomes lost can receive a second transformation, it does not only apply to esk that are forsaking their Origin. Esk that lose their connection to their home can also become lost souls in need of transformation.
